Kathmandu, April 9, 2013 – The Embassy of India in Nepal has published the result of the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship for Nepalese students for 2013. This scholarship is awarded to Nepalese students studying in class XI and XII. The number of scholarships has been increased from 1000 to 2000, and the scholarship amount is also increased from NPR 500 to NPR 2000 from this year onward.
Out of the total scholarship recipients, 85 are from the Dalit community and among them, 17 are of PDRC includes 16 Dalit and one Tharu student. PDRC inquired for the confirmation of the selected Dalit students and discovered that despite being selected, of the 85 students, 60% of them were not even aware of this information.
PDRC contacted selected students and guided them to prepare relevant documents to follow the procedures for opening the bank account. The students from the Madhesi community have been found to benefit in large numbers. In addition, this scholarship has instigated a hope among Dalit students that despite obstacles, a real talent and hard work pays off, irrespective of one’s caste and economic background.
