The 47th International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was observed here with a series of activities. This historic day was marked jointly by the sister organizations of major political parties and civil society organizations. This day aims at reminding the killing of 69 innocent black people by the police at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960.
PDRC also participated in a peaceful demonstration started from Bhadrakali, Kathmandu. This rally was later turned into interaction on the “National Seminar on Dalits’ Rights in New Constitution” in Nepal Academy Hall, Kamaladi, Kathmandu. The Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN (UML) chairperson Jhalanath Khanal, and Nepali Congress Vice president Ram Chandra Poudel addressed the meeting. They stressed that their party would not leave any stone unturned to enshrine Dalit rights in the new constitution. In the program, various other party leaders including CPN-ML general secretary CP Mainali, secretary of CPN (Integrated) Sita Ram Tamang pledged to work for the guarantee of Dalit rights.
Highlighting his party’s role in empowering the Dalit community, chairman Prachanda further pointed to the need of vigorous people’s struggle for special rights to the Dalits. Similarly, CPN-UML chairperson Jhala Nath Khanal said that his party is effortful to empower Dalits.
